Out in Tacoma

Tacoma lies at the head of Commencement Bay. It is the second city in size and importance on Puget Sound. Its port, which is rapidly expanding, is second only to Seattle. Tacoma has extensive foreign and domestic trade, principally with the Far East. It is the port of Entry.

Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Takhoma or Mount Tahoma. It is known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad Tacoma's motto became "When rails meet sails." Today, Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast and Washington state's largest port.(Wikipedia)

The main exports were oil seed and grain, industrial machinery, cereals, meat products, vehicles and parts, vegetables and fruit; the main imports were industrial machinery, vehicles and parts, electronics, toys and sports equipment. (ASD NP25)

Hitachinaka, Japan was our last port in Asia prior calling Tacoma. We were given three route options by our weather consultant SMHI (accredited by company) to Tacoma. In the end Master followed his original plan to go Rhumbline which is 200+ NM longer than Great Circle thinking it would be much safer than to go further north via Aleutian Passage.

Original plan was to arrive at 0630H and depart the same day at 1800H (which is normal). Due to slow cargo operation and strict 0800H-1700H work shift, we depart the following day, thus gave us opportunity to explore the city.

It took about 20-25 minutes drive from ship to the city. Captain contacted a maritime service to drive us to the city.

First stop, Best Buy. Planned to buy a tablet or an Ipad which has front camera. The high price of the said gadgets dimmed my hope to have one.
